FIRST DRAFT SKETCHUP MODEL

STAIR SECTION - CARLO SCARPA

I CHOSE THE STAIRS DESIGNED BY CARLO SCARPA AT THE CULTURAL STRUCTURE 'FONDAZIONE QUERINI STAMPALIA' IN VENICE. THE FIRST SKETCH IS A SECTION ADJACENT TO THE DOOR. THE SECOND SKETCH RUNS PARALLEL WITH THE DOOR. BELOW IS PHOTO OF THE STAIRS. I FIND CARLO SCARPA'S WORK TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND INSPIRATIONAL. I APPRECIATE THE CHOICE OF MATERIALS HE USES IN HIS DESIGNS.

TA PROHM TEMPLE, CAMBODIA

TA PROHM TEMPLE IS LOCATED AT ANGKOR, CAMBODIA. UNLIKE MOST OF THE OTHER ANGKOR TEMPLES, THE RUINS HAVE BEEN LEFT ESSENTIALLY IN THE CONDITION THEY WERE FOUND. THE MOST DISTINCTIVE FEATURE OF THE RUINS IS THE TREE GROWING FROM IT, WHICH IS FOR THE MOST PART HOLDING THE RUINS TOGETHER, BUT ALSO CAUSING ITS DEMISE BY DETERIORATING THE STRUCTURE. IT WAS BUILT BY KING JAYAVARMAN VII AS A MAHAYANA BUDDHIST MONASTERY AND UNIVERSITY IN THE LATE 12TH AND EARLY 13TH CENTURY. THIS TEMPLE WAS MADE FAMOUS BY ITS APPEARANCE IN THE MOVIE TOMB RAIDER, BUT TRULY IS ONE OF THE MOST EXTRAORDINARY SITES IN THE WORLD.

LOUVRE MUSEUM, PARIS

THE LOUVRE MUSEM IS A HISTORIC MONUMENT AND IS THE MOST VISITED MUSEUM IN THE WORLD. THE MUSEUM IS HOUSED IN THE LOUVRE PALACE WHICH WAS BUILT IN THE 12TH CENTURY. IT WAS OPENED AS A MUSEUM ON 10TH AUGUST 1793. THE PYRAMID WAS COMMISSIONED IN 1984. THE PYRAMID AND UNDERGROUND LOBBY BENEATH IT WERE CREATED TO ALLOW FOR THE IMMENSE NUMBER OF VISITORS, WHICH THE LOUVRES ORIGINAL MAIN ENTRANCE COULD NO LONGER HANDLE. THE CONTRASTING ARCHITECTURAL STYLES OF THIS CLASSICAL AND ULTRA MODERN MONUMENT HAVE MADE THIS A CONTROVERSIAL YET MAGNIFICENT PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE.
